Wedding Cakes can be traced as far back as Roman times. The Wedding cake has become a symbol of various traditions and customs, some of these customs are still alive today.
An outdated wedding cakes custom used to be to break the wedding cake over the bride’s head. During the Roman empire the groom would eat part of a loaf baked especially for the wedding vows and break the rest over his bride’s head. The breaking of the bread was meant to symbolize the breaking of the bride’s virginal state and the dominance of the groom over the bride.
There are accounts of small sweet buns being stacked into a large pile in front of the married couple during medieval times. The couple would then attempt to kiss over the pile of buns, if they succeeded then it was a sign that there would be children for the couple in the future.
Between the 17th and 19th centuries a popular dish known as the bride’s pie was used during ceremonies. The pie would be filled with sweet breads, the main ingredient in the pie was a glass ring. It is said that the lady who found the ringwould be the next to be married.
It wasn’t until the late 19th century that wedding cakes became popular, early wedding cakes were simple single tiered plum cakes. It wasn’t until many years later that the popular multi tiered wedding cakes known today first appeared at weddings.
